Reality Check - Laura Warshauer's Compelling Secret

First and foremost, singer-songwriter Laura Warshauer is a storyteller, examining loss, love and life through her music. The twenty something year old New Jersey native crafts sonic gems, combining pop melodies and flourishes of rock, while her lyrical sensibility hearkens back to songsmiths like Joni Mitchell and Fiona Apple.

Laura’s self-titled seven-song debut EP was recently released via Pink Chariot/Island Records. The disc features orchestral textures that perfectly compliment her warm, ethereal vocals. Warshauer describes her sound best, “There’s definitely a rock sensibility, but it’s really about grand melodies. I have a very classic pop structure in terms of my writing style, but lyrically, I offer a unique angle.”

The songs spoke loud and clear, and Laura’s talent caught the ear of Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid. He received one of her demos, and had to go see her play. “He came to a Sunday night rehearsal, and his hands were in the air when he heard me. Afterwards, he said if you want it you have a home with Island Records.” Their partnership has set the stage for Laura’s EP this fall and her next full-length CD, Such A Lovely Place, produced by Rich Keller, due out in Spring 2009.

We caught up with Laura for a quick Q&A, and she told us everything that was on her mind!

CWG: LA Reid signed you to Island/Def Jam after one performance. Reid has guided many artists to great success. What advise has he given you as your career is starting?

The same advice that Lionel Richie recently gave me - "Just keep going!"

CWG: What have you learned busking in the subway?
You see what catches and holds people's attention. You learn about inhabiting any sort of environment and making it your own.
CWG: Your music has been described as a Joni Mitchell sound with a 60s influence. What is it about the 60's that inspires you?

Passion.

Music brought people together; it was (and is) both a catharsis and a refuge. Women were empowered, and songwriters created entire movements with the strength of their lyrics and delivery.

When I got signed by LA Reid, he said the raw passion of my stage performance made him feel like he was in the back in the 1960's.

CWG: You are apart of Musicians On Call (a group that plays for hospital patients). How did you get involved with the organization? How can others get involved?
I got involved at 16, after another songwriter heard me play and told me about the organization. As a volunteer, I get the privilege to play songs for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City.

CWG: What can we expect from your album "Such A Lovely Place"?

Something classic yet modern with a sound that is all at once unique and familiar.

CWG: What are your goals for your career?

I want to rock stadiums and be doing that in 25 years.
CWG: What did you learn from recording your EP and how did you apply it to recording your album?

I learned about feeling and being free to create and see where it takes me. The possibilities are limitless, and it is empowering to embrace that reality and run with it.

CWG: You have been described as a storyteller, how do you come up with your songs?

Quite simply, I write songs about things that move me. I am constantly writing; Anything and everything can be a source of inspiration.

CWG: Is there an artist or producer you would like to work with and why?

U2. Their live shows are unlike anything I have ever experienced. They are magnetic; there is something almost other-worldy when those four musicians take the stage. If I could sing with Bono I would be thrilled.

CWG: Your live shows have been described as compelling. Are you looking forward to touring for the new album? What can we expect for your live shows?

I can't wait to tour. Being in the studio is amazing, but it is really on stage where the interaction between artist and audience enables the songs come to life in the way that they can and should.

From my live shows, expect the unexpected. It's about connecting with people; my voice, the songs, the presentation are simply the vehicles to convey emotion.

Sam Sparro orbits into our stratosphere like a messenger from the future sent to hold off the end of summer blues with one last wild party. As he says in the lead track “S.A.M.S.P.A.R.R.O.” of the EP Black & Gold, out August 21 on Modus Vivendi Music, he has a lot to say and a lot to do.

In “S.A.M.S.P.A.R.R.O.,” Sam blasts through the sound barrier on an incessant meladrone beat, brandishing a vocoder to synthesize his voice, shrouding the purity of his lush, soulful instrument to minimize the impact upon ears dulled by lesser pop singers. He’s the dance scene shepherd preparing to lead us to sounds and places we long to go.

And so the road is paved in Black & Gold. The journey is ours for the taking, led by the cunning musicologist out to show us a good time. Through six brisk tracks, Sam thrusts into the limelight sounds and textures at once foreign and familiar – ’70s soul grooves, ’80s freestyle beats, ’90s garage – cornerstones from the heydays of youth when idealism ruled and our personal soundtracks reflected the upward trajectory of our lives. Like a cheeky historian, Sam culls the archives of forgotten record bins and coaxes his findings in unexpected ways – creating an infectious musical soundscape loaded with sex appeal.
And soon we are enraptured, knowing full well how his heart beats.

Then he opens his mouth and the soul speaks. We are Chaka-d by the beauty of his R& B stylings, momentarily thrown back to a sugar shack in the Bayou where honey-suckled voices reigned supreme. Sam is smooth, delicious and all too good for us. “You must have thought I was a snack because your sticking to me like cling wrap,” he croons on “Cling Wrap,” knowing full well that by the time we reach this point, the penultimate track on the EP, he so has us craving more...and fearing that the party may soon end.

The Hangmen - L.A. Scene At Its Best

The Hangmen have been kicking around the L.A. scene for a decade and a half or so, yet still remain the best of the bunch. What started as a good time at Raji’s mutated into a major label funded, drug fueled rock ‘n’ roll nightmare of E! True Hollywood Story proportions only to sink into the darkness to gain strength and return a more powerful beast than before. Wiser, stronger, harder, better. Loteria is the proof that the Hangmen are not only among the best rock bands out there today, but maybe the last real rock ‘n’ roll band.

In 2000, the band kicked out the critically heralded Metallic IOU and pulled off the rare feat of making a comeback album better then their Capitol Records debut in 1989. They hit the road with the likes of Social Distortion, Supersuckers, The Kills and Concrete Blonde and began to turn on a whole new legion of fans hungry for the rock. By 2002, hot off the road, The Hangmen unleashed We’ve Got Blood On the Toes of Our Boots, a blistering live in the studio affair that found them re-recording numbers off their debut alongside IOU cuts and few rare nuggets. More touring ensued and The Hangmen were back in action finally getting the respect they deserve.

After years of burnouts, burned deals and burned bridges, The Hangmen were back on course and Small found himself an influence to new generation of underground heroes as Supersuckers leader Eddie Spaghetti credits him as a major influence, L7 sang his praises and the Hangmen’s debut was cited as an highly influential record in rock circles. Small has become the go-to guy for hip indie filmmakers looking for words of wisdom on rock ‘n’ roll sects, as he’s been featured in the rock documentary Badsville and appears in the Gun Club biography The Birth, the Death and the Ghost.

Loteria is the band’s third album in four years, and may very well be their finest to date. The current lineup consists of drummer Todd Haney, bassist Angelique Congelton and guitarist Rane Raitsikka (formerly of Finnish glam-punk gods Smack) and, quite frankly, they have never sounded better.

"There is a big world out there, and we wanna go check it out and play our music,” Smalls says with a Cheshire cat grin. “I mean, we’re a new and upcoming band even though we’ve been around forever. We just want people to hear our new record."

From the vicious opening salvo of “Blood Red” to the sonic dirge closer “I Just Wanna Feel Good,” Loteria is thirteen songs of pure rock n' roll decadence. The album plays like a series of Hollywood war stories. The people, the streets, the drugs, and bum deals, it’s all there. The lyrics speak volumes and reek of personalized tales of heartache and redemption. The music is junkie rock without the junk no more. Chicago Rockers, Chevelle are back with a new line up and their 3rd Major Label Release, "Vena Sera." A lot of critics hate this album. I say, "Fuck the critics!" This is by far the best, most daring, and most consistent album chevelle has released since "Point #1."

"Vena Sera" starts off with "Antisaint," a banger in the vein of Tool, and keeps hammering you home. "Safewaters," "Well Enough Alone," and "Saturdays" follow the classic Alt-Metal heavy/soft/heavy/soft format. Typical for the genre, but the hooks are infectious.

The rest of the songs on the album are heavy all the way through, occasionaly pausing to pummel the listeners with downtuned guitar noise and Pete Loeffler's signature howl.

For those of you who prefer iTunes, "Vena Sera (iTunes exclusive) comes with "Debt to the Earth" as an extra bonus track.

Shat is the natural extension of a musical genius that is the one and only Jeff Wood. Jeff Wood, our generation's Bob Dylan, is obviously not your ordinary, run of the mill rock icon. Jeff Wood's story is as intriguing as it is inspiring. Many years ago, Jeff was the victim of a gang shooting in Los Angeles, which left him with a bullet forever lodged in his brain, and bed ridden for quite some time. Jeff was forced to re-learn many menial day to day tasks, as well as music and learning it from scratch. In some twisted way, the tragedy that occurred to Jeff, turned him into a modern day super hero. Gone forever from his tampered brain were thoughts that now seem so trivial. His inner workings now are simple and amiable, without a cruel intention in his head. And he now has less vision in both of his eyes than most have in one. From then forward, the only things that really mattered to Jeff at all in his new innocent and adolescent like mindset were sex, food, and music. A musical genius was born.

In Jeff Wood's eyes, all girls are mint (beautiful and perfect that is). And having sex is "the most beautiful thing in the world" and one should take jumps, leaps, and bounds to do it as often as possible because that "is what makes the world go round."

Thus, the basic essence of Shat, is the basic essence of life: sex, food, and music. Shat is for the people, by the people. Shat songs are anthems for the every day Joe. Every day people who work as gardeners, just like Jeff does, can relate to "Fuck, I Stepped In Shit". Every day people who get zits on their dick can relate to "Got A Zit On My Dick". Los Angeles Alt-Country rockers, Dead Rock West's debut disc on Populuxe Records is an Americana masterpiece. Described by the press as "X meets Wilco," "Honey and Salt" picks up where L.A. legends, X left off.

"Highway 1," the albums first single sounds like it walked right out of a movie, giving you the feeling that you've heard the song before (which is a good thing).

"Honey and Salt" boasts four singles: "Highway 1," "Don't Worry About Me," "Going Home," and ""I Really Wanted You." Each cut packs a down-home whallop. In this day and age, it's rare to find an album with one good single, let alone four. The non-singles are pretty killer as well.

"Boredom is driving me to drink," singer Frank Lee Drennen yodels in "Boredom (How Did I Get Here," a country-influenced crooner that would fit right in on the jukebox at a Greasy Spoon in a Appalachia.

Franks vocals are perfectly harmonized by co-lead singer, Cindy Wassermun, and his band of local celebrities: members of Dead Rock West have toured and/or recorded with Abandoned Pools, John Doe of X, Rod Stewart, Tracy Chapman, and Social Distortion.
